Fix a damaged PDF and see what came back

A PDF that suddenly refuses to open is stressful, especially when it is a signed contract, a bank statement, or the only copy of a report. Most damage comes from interrupted downloads, failed email attachments, full USB drives, or apps that crashed while saving. Repair PDF rebuilds the file's internal structure, restores the page list, and recovers everything that is still in the file. A quick pass runs in your browser. If the damage runs deeper, the file is sent to our server. If the damage runs deeper, a deep repair takes over in our secure cloud and, as a last resort, rebuilds readable pages as images. Afterwards you see a clear report: what was fixed and how many pages were recovered. You can repair up to 10 PDFs at once, with no ads and no sign-up.

Two repair passes — private first, deeper when needed

Your PDF is first repaired right in your browser, so it never leaves your device. Only when that isn't enough does a deep repair run in our secure cloud, where temporary copies are deleted automatically.

Repair PDF FAQ

Is it free to repair a PDF?

Yes. Repair PDF is part of your free daily uses, for files up to 100 MB and up to 10 files at a time. A repair counts as one job, even when the deep repair has to step in. There are no ads and no watermark on the repaired file. Pro raises the limit to 100 MB per file and gives you more daily jobs.

Why won't my PDF open?

The most common causes are an interrupted download, an email attachment that was cut off, a file copied to a full or unplugged USB drive, and an app that crashed while saving. In each case, part of the file's internal structure is broken or missing, so PDF readers give up. Repair PDF rebuilds that structure so the file opens again.

Can every damaged PDF be repaired?

Most can, but not all. Repair recovers everything that is still inside the file. If part of the file was never downloaded or has been overwritten, those pages are gone, and no tool can bring them back. Your report shows exactly how many pages were recovered, so you know right away whether you need to download the file again.

Is my file safe when I repair it here?

Yes. The quick repair runs in your browser. If that is not enough, the file is sent to our server, and temporary copies are removed within 1 hour. Password-protected PDFs are repaired on your device, because a deep repair cannot open them.

What is the difference between the quick repair and the deep repair?

The quick repair fixes the file's structure on your device, which is enough for most broken downloads and saving errors. The deep repair rewrites the whole document in our secure cloud and can handle heavier damage. If even that fails, it rebuilds each readable page as an image, so you keep the content even when the text can no longer be selected.

The repaired PDF has blank or wrong pages. What can I do?

Tap "Try a deep repair" on the result. It uses a different method that often fixes pages the quick repair couldn't. If the pages were rebuilt as images, run OCR PDF afterwards to make the text searchable again. If pages are still missing, the data was lost from the file itself, and a fresh download from the original source is the best fix.

It says my file isn't really a PDF. What does that mean?

Sometimes a file gets a .pdf name even though it is something else, such as a photo, a Word document, or a web page saved by a failed download. Repair PDF checks what the file really is and points you to the right tool, like Image to PDF or Word to PDF, so you can turn it into a proper PDF.

Can I repair a PDF on my phone?

Yes. Open this page in Safari or Chrome on your iPhone or Android, choose the damaged file from Files or your downloads, and tap Repair PDF. It works the same way on tablets, Mac, and Windows, with nothing to install and no account to create.
